Ancient Pharmacy

  • The pharmacy

In the heart of Asciano, since the late 18th century, this pharmacy, founded in 1795 under the name “All’insegna di Sant’Agata” by the Francini Naldi family, stands as a silent witness to past eras. Carefully preserved with love and precision, this pharmacy remains an enchanted corner where time seems to have stood still.

  • History and Discovery

Stepping through the doors of the new "Farmacia De Munari," heir to the Francini Naldi tradition, you are transported on a journey through time. The ancient pharmacy, almost entirely unchanged, reveals its mysterious past thanks to the secret notes of Francesco Francini Naldi, an alchemist and apothecary from the late 18th century. During recent restoration work, the current descendant discovered these notes hidden in the nooks and crannies of the pharmacy, including an arcane recipe: vinpepato, an elixir made from herbs, roots, and fortified wine.

  • Architecture and Art

Inside, the atmosphere is enveloped by a neoclassical elegance, where every detail tells a story. The furniture, adorned with golden garlands and Egyptian-style bas-reliefs, evokes an era of sophistication and mystery. The carefully preserved display cabinets showcase ancient glass and ceramic containers, decorated with intricate motifs, that once held medicinal ingredients. Every label, every object is arranged with order and precision, serving as a living archive of pharmaceutical history.

Entering the Francini Naldi Pharmacy is like stepping back in time, breathing in the air of an era when every remedy was prepared with care and dedication. The immersive atmosphere allows visitors to appreciate not only the aesthetics of the period but also the sense of continuity and tradition that has passed through the centuries. The pharmacy is not just a place of history but a living testament to how the art of apothecary intertwined with daily life, inviting visitors to discover and appreciate a unique piece of the past.
