Path #3: The Biancane of Leonina

  • White domes

The Biancane, changing with each hour and season, will offer you an unforgettable view!

  • What you will see along the route:

    • The gentle hills of the Crete Senesi
You will discover a postcard-like landscape. Gentle hills that change with the seasons: green in spring, golden in summer, brown, gray, and sometimes purple in autumn and winter; a clayey-sandy soil that is perfect for wheat cultivation!
    • The Geosite of the Biancane of Leonina
A protected natural area, made up of Biancane: small white domes formed by clay-sandy soil dating back to the Pliocene! Note: It’s a protected area! It’s forbidden to climb or step on the Biancane. Help us keep them healthy and preserve them for the future!
    • The first Nature Trail of the Crete Senesi
Opened in 2021, it allows you to get closer to the incredible micro-ecosystem of the Biancane Geosite: flora, fauna, history, and curiosities are explained on panels along the route.
    • The Site Transitoire
This monumental artwork, made of Etruscan basalt, consists of key elements such as a seat, a bench or sarcophagus, and a window, oriented to welcome the sunlight directly on the summer solstice day.

Note: It’s a work of art! It’s forbidden to step on or climb it, but you can sit on the seat to admire and connect with the artwork!

  • Safety Guidelines

    1. Choose trails based on your physical and technical abilities, inform yourself about the route, and although the trails are marked, make sure to have a proper hiking map.
    2. Dress appropriately for the effort and length of the hike, and equip yourself with essentials (water, sunscreen, hat, food, etc.), including a first-aid kit for any emergencies.
    3. Stay informed about the weather forecast and always monitor the weather conditions during your hike.
    4. All routes in Life Park are in natural environments: walking them means accepting the risk of practicing a sport in nature. Long live NATURE!

This loop trail will take you to one of the most beautiful corners of the Crete Senesi, where nature shows its best side. If you step off the trail for a few meters, don’t miss the Site Transitoire: a fusion of Art and Nature by sculptor Jean-Paul Philippe.
