Cassioli Museum.
19th-Century Sienese Painting

The museum was established in 1991 with an initial collection of sketches and works from the studio of artists Amos and Giuseppe Cassioli, donated to the community of Asciano by their heirs. In 2007, the museum was renovated, featuring a new exhibition route enriched by works provided by the “Duccio di Buoninsegna” Art High School in Siena, formerly the Academy of Fine Arts, where Amos received his training.

It stands as the only museum entirely dedicated to 19th-century Sienese painting.

The Exhibition Route

Visiting this museum is quite a unique experience: the exhibition route, enhanced by period photographs, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Art Academy through sketches, color tests, art exercises, plaster casts, and various equipment. In the museum’s rooms, alongside the works of the Cassiolis, you can also admire pieces by renowned artists such as Francesco Nenci, Luigi Mussini, Angelo Visconti, Pietro Aldi, Ulisse Forni, Cristiano Banti, and Cesare Maccari. These masters not only depicted episodes from ancient times and mythology but were also keen observers of their era, masterfully narrating stories on canvas that have become part of collective memory.

Amos and Giuseppe Cassioli

Amos Cassioli, famous for his skill in portraiture, had a prolific artistic career. Among his many works, he painted the “Sala del Risorgimento” in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico and immortalized “The Battle of Legnano,” now housed in Palazzo Pitti in Florence. His talent stood out for his ability to capture the historical essence and patriotic fervor of the moments he depicted.
His son, Giuseppe, who also possessed exceptional artistic abilities, focused on sculpture, contributing to historically significant projects. Some of his most notable works include the bronze doors of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Funeral Monument to Gioachino Rossini, both in Florence. In Asciano, he left a sculpted portrait dedicated to his father’s memory.
Amos and Giuseppe Cassioli left an indelible mark on the history of Italian art, enriching the artistic landscape with their iconic works.

Giuseppe’s Olympic Medal

Giuseppe Cassioli was the protagonist of an exciting artistic venture! In 1925, he won the competition organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the design of a medal to be awarded at future Olympic Games. His design featured the figure of Glory raising a laurel wreath toward the victorious athlete, an image that would define Olympic medals for over forty years, from the 1928 Amsterdam Games to the 2000 Sydney Games, leaving a significant artistic legacy on the international stage.
